Publicity Campaign: Haydn Lawson - ‘NULLARBOR’
Known for his heartfelt storytelling and evocative soundscapes, Haydn Lawson returns with his latest single ‘NULLARBOR’, out 26 September. Written as a love letter to those he left behind in Perth, ‘NULLARBOR’ captures the moment Haydn packed up his life and drove across Australia in search of a new chapter in Melbourne. The result is a sweeping, guitar-driven anthem that traces the emotional landscape of leaving home, saying goodbye, and embracing the unknown.
The track opens with gentle electric guitar and strings, reflecting on Haydn’s childhood and the early sparks of his musical journey. As the song builds, tight drums and rocking rhythm guitars propel the listener into the present, mirroring the real-life momentum of crossing the Nullarbor. Haydn’s honest lyrics shine through, painting vivid scenes of departure, longing, and hope. “‘NULLARBOR’ is my goodbye letter to Perth,” Haydn shares. “It’s about the people I love, the parts of myself I left behind, and the hope that comes with starting over. I wanted the song’s length to echo the endless road across Australia, so the listener can feel the journey as much as hear it.”
A true collaborative effort, ‘NULLARBOR’ features guitars from Salvador Peralta, drums by Harry Millikan, and lush violin and viola from Helen Bower and Alex MacDonald (Forest Collective). The song’s piano lines, improvised by Junaid Eastman (Jamichi), weave throughout, while a choir assembled by Imogen Cygler gently lifts the chorus. The track was mixed by Anton Hagop and mastered by George Georgiadis at Little Wing Sound, giving it a polished yet deeply personal finish.
The accompanying music video, directed and edited by Haydn and his partner, embraces a DIY spirit. Filmed on a green screen in their living room, the video is true to the track’s playful tribute.
Haydn’s artistry is rooted in self-exploration and creative expression, from late-night songwriting to the vibrant drag and queer scenes of Perth and Melbourne. Makeup, drag, and art gave him the confidence to share his music with the world, and those experiences shaped both the visuals and the storytelling of this project. Influenced by lyric-driven artists like Lorde, Adele, Lianne La Havas, Kara Jackson, and Phoebe Bridgers, Haydn weaves acoustic warmth and poetic honesty into every note, with ‘NULLARBOR’ standing as a road-trip anthem at the heart of his new work.
With more singles, on the way, ‘NULLARBOR’ is just the beginning.
