MAGDALIA UNVEILS NEW SINGLE ‘PIECES OF ME’ – A CELEBRATION OF CONNECTION, GROWTH, AND PASSING THE TORCH

Award-winning Melbourne singer-songwriter Magdalia returns with her latest single, ‘Pieces of Me’, a stirring duet that explores the powerful bonds between teacher and student, and the legacy of women supporting women in music. ‘Pieces of Me’ is Magdalia’s most personal work yet, blending heartfelt storytelling with a robust, choir-backed sound.

Written in collaboration with Olivia Regueira-Garcia from The Artist Studio Sydney, ‘Pieces of Me’ was always intended as a duet with Kaylah, one of Magdalia’s first students and now a fellow artist and friend. The track’s genesis is deeply rooted in their shared journey, with Magdalia mentoring Kaylah from her early high school days through to her recent graduation as a music educator herself. “I wanted to write something that encapsulated our relationship, not just as teacher and student, but as friends who have helped shape each other’s paths,” Magdalia shares. “Inspired by songs like ‘Nothing New’ by Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers, I wanted to challenge the narrative that women in music have an expiry date. ‘Pieces of Me’ is about giving the best parts of ourselves to those we love, and watching them grow in turn.”

The recording process brought together more than just Magdalia and Kaylah, students from their vocal studio feature as a choir, lending the chorus a rich, communal feel. “It was incredibly rewarding to see our students step into the studio, some for the very first time. Including them wasn’t just about the music; it’s about passing on experiences and creating memories that last,” Magdalia says. “It’s also a small way to address the underrepresentation of women in music, by making space for new voices and new stories.”

Produced by Seetali and mixed by Liv Volpe at DownUp Studios, ‘Pieces of Me’ stands out for its storytelling, layered harmonies, and a perspective shift that keeps listeners engaged. The song’s influences, ranging from Dami Im’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ to the narrative-driven lyricism of Taylor Swift, shine through in its structure and emotional depth.

Magdalia’s commitment to authenticity and community has already earned her accolades, from a Music Victoria Amplify Award nomination to the 2024 RSOM Songwriter of the Year title. With ‘Pieces of Me,’ she continues to carve out space for honest, inclusive storytelling in the Australian music scene.
