Publicity Campaign: Mark Howard - ‘Seafaring Man’

Mark Howard returns with ‘Seafaring Man’, an expansive, cinematic indie-folk cut that draws out the darker undercurrent of the stories we’re raised on, where adventure and romance come at a cost.

Based on Phillip Island, Mark first composed ‘Seafaring Man’ for a fringe reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’. Built for the stage, the original version was epic, heavy, dramatic. After the production’s Melbourne run and subsequent UK tour, a different take began to surface in his acoustic sets. Quieter and more intimate, carrying the same narrative weight with less spectacle. Eventually, the new interpretation found its way into the studio.

Working with producer Dave Prideaux, Howard expanded the song into something more  atmospheric and brooding with a sinister edge threaded through the arrangement. Mastering was handled by Andy Stewart, who brought balance to the dynamics and a polished finish without sanding down the song’s tension.

For Mark, ‘Seafaring Man’ reflects his broader creative arc, where the reward is in the process, not the destination.“I think it mirrors my own journey as a musician and discovering the value of a creative life lies as much in the experience as in the work itself,” he says.

That idea sits at the track’s emotional centre, lingering on the tension between pursuit and consequence. Mark hopes the single offers listeners a chance to reflect on the idea that beneath the promise of adventure lies a darker reckoning with what we stand to lose along the way.

With a sound that dances between indie rock, cinematic soul and alt country, Mark has performed across 45 countries, earning critical acclaim and a loyal following. His previous singles have charted on AMRAP and received praise from Australian and international media, with Mark’s heartfelt storytelling and cinematic arrangements continuing to resonate with listeners worldwide.

Despite a career that’s taken him across the globe, Howard keeps his ego on a short leash. When asked about his proudest moment so far, he replied: “ I think I'll know when I'm done. Hopefully it's still ahead of me.”

That honesty sharpens at the song’s close. Howard points to the final lyric as his favourite, explaining: “My intention is to strip the romance from the story and leave the listener with an uncomfortable truth.”
